Tokyo 2020 has signed an agreement to help power the Olympic and Paralympics with just days to go before the launch of the Games here.

Organisers have welcomed Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) - Japan's largest power company group - as an official contributor as the delayed Olympic Opening Ceremony looms on July 23.

TEPCO's responsibilities will include emergency response in the event of power failure at Games venues and other areas.

The company will also support with the construction and operation of electrical equipment and inspect power supplies.

"Facing the challenge of the first ever postponement of the Games in Olympic and Paralympic history, we are delighted to welcome TEPCO as an official contributor," said Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto.

"We are very encouraged and grateful to TEPCO for their full support in ensuring the stable operation of power supply facilities at Games venues, including any emergency response required.

"We will continue to make steady preparations for a safe and secure Games together with TEPCO and our other official contributors and partners."

Official contributor status differs from Tokyo 2020's sponsorship programme as it recognises non-profit organisations which work towards the delivery of the Games.

Companies are allowed to use designations to explain their contributions within Japan.

TEPCO employs nearly 38,000 people and generates and sells energy in the Kanto region, including Tokyo and Yokohama.

"TEPCO is honoured and humbled to be able to support the Tokyo 2020 Games as an official contributor," said the company's President Tomoaki Kobayakawa.

"Looking back, we also supported for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 1964.

"Leveraging our know-how, experience and networks, we will do our utmost to ensure a stable power supply for the venues and other facilities of the Tokyo 2020 Games, and contribute to a safe and secure event."
